How to Start the New Year on Trend in Your Kitchen and Dining Area

The holidays are over, which means taking down all your holiday decorations because before you know it, the next holiday will be here, and you don’t want your Christmas lights still hanging in Spring.

After the New Year, it’s an exciting time for me because I can reassess my style in my home and where I want to take it. It’s also a great time to switch directions stylistically and declutter and decide what ambiance will be best for the upcoming year.

The kitchen and dining room are the most important rooms to focus on for me because they often feel barren after the holiday decorations are taken down. Here are some things that are trending and what you can do to really spruce up your kitchen and dining area in 2020.

Let’s begin with the kitchen.

The focus in many kitchens is the cabinetry. Whether you’re looking for a quick update or a complete facelift, switching up the look of your cabinets can change the whole look. Some trends that you will be seeing in 2020 are splashes of color in cabinetry. Some color schemes you will be seeing more of are grays, blues, reds and oranges. A cost-efficient version would be to paint what already exists.

Replacing your hardware on all your cabinets can also really set the tone and completely change the look of your kitchen without spending a lot of money or doing any sort of construction. My kitchen came with very standard silver hardware and replacing them with a gold or brass modern handle will create a completely different style. Copper is a trend that will be making a big splash in 2020. Whether your personal style is more traditional or contemporary, there are tons of amazing options out there to really fit what you’re looking for. It allows you to customize your kitchen without breaking the bank.

Another popular trend in kitchens for the new year is open shelving. This allows you to display some of your favorite pieces from your kitchenware. It will also force you to declutter and make sure that it stays that way.

While farmhouse décor might be taking a backseat in the new year, one trend that won’t be going away is farmhouse sinks. Not only do they come in a variety of styles, textures, and colors, but they make doing dishes easier. It can truly become the focal point in any kitchen.

Let’s move on to the dining area.

Find a unique lighting fixture to completely give your dining area a facelift. Chandeliers of varying textures and shapes are going to be a trend you will be seeing more often in the new year.

Because I am completely changing the hardware on my cabinets, I have also decided to match a new chandelier. I went with brass hardware and a brass chandelier and it really modernized the entire area, all while keeping it consistent.

While kitchens are trending more towards “clean” in 2020, dining areas are looking more eclectic. For instance, a popular style will be mismatching dining room table chairs. This could be putting a bench with chairs or having the head of the table chairs be different from the rest.

Another great way to add texture and color to your dining area is by adding a colorful area rug under your table. If you tend to like to keep your table simple, this is a great way to enliven up the room. Some great ones that are popular in the new year are oriental rugs in blues, oranges and reds.

Many of the styles that are going to be most popular are leaning towards a more modern feel. However, one decorative piece that I did see repeatedly while researching, is wallpaper. Wallpaper in kitchens (in place of backsplashes) and dining rooms. Wallpaper in new designs, colors and styles are sure to make a huge statement!

Whether you’re looking for a small change or a large one, January is always a great time to give these areas a fun new look!
